About this project
Designed to support Citizen Science, the Dog’s Log app enables people, especially dog-lovers, to capture pictures of dogs in the neighborhood. With an structured data entry screen, users can easily populate necessary data for their captured dogs. Everyone’s contributions are always beneficial for scientists to analyze the dog's population.
Unlike most of my UI/UX that are collaborated with other student, Dog's Log is an individual project.
Its intuitive design includes
- Familiar navigation bar at bottom
- The Map screen obviously presents dogs of all users
- Information display (for the selected dog) is organized
- A congratulations screen after user's first contribution/journal entry
and lot more creatively-designed features & visual elements
The Interaction Design
Interactive prototype is located on the top of this page.
Photo map
- Users can view everyone's dog journal entries being geo-tagged on a map.
- Click on any photo will pop-up a overlay on bottom showing its brief information.
- Click on the overlay again to bring up the dog's detailed information (such as its physical characteristics).
- To capture as many data as possible, users can directly click the Add bottom at any time to capture a dog.
Journal display
- Structured data organization: easy to find, view, and edit data values. Includes icons for extra readability.
- Use calendar-like display to view all your journal entries organized by date. You will feel accomplished to see how many dogs you've captured.
- Users can create custom metadata (such as the dog's diet metadata), which will be displayed on the left column.
First-time tutorial
- Guide first-time users to learn using Dog's Log app to capture a dog and contribute to citizen science.
- While users can take a picture of the dog, they can also record this dog’s voice as the additional data.
- Feature a reward screen to praise new users' effort and encourage them to continue using Dog's Log.
- This app does not prompt scientific information to encourage more novice users to participate.
Future improvements
- Introduce pet-related reward features on top contributors to encourage users contribute more.
- Make the data-entry screen less cluttered by removing unnecessary detailed information.
- Consider some pets' owners that do not want their dogs to be captured by Dog's Log users (citizen science researcher). This interaction design is more suitable to capture animals that does not pose other people's privacy concerns (such as raccoon).
- Create a high-fidelity prototype of this Interaction Design.
